Celebrating the Past

Named in honor of the illustrious fur trapper & explorer William L. Sublette,

whose pivotal contributions facilitated the influx of numerous settlers to the region, Sublette County celebrated its centennial in 2023. Well before the county's formal establishment in 1923, the area held profound historical significance, providing a home to a diverse array of Native American tribes, including Arapaho, Arikara, Bannock, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Crow, Gros Ventre, Kiowa, Nez Perce, Sheep Eater, Sioux, Shoshone, and Ute tribes.

Next to settle into the high mountain desert that we call home were fur trappers, loggers, sheep and cattle ranchers who all played an integral role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of Sublette County.

For a more in-depth look at Sublette County History, we recommend visiting one or both of our fantastic museums and reading the links to the right.
