Rivers & Lakes

Chasing Waterfalls,

Water

Sublette County, Wyoming, is a haven for water enthusiasts, home to thousands of glacier lakes, many offering a diverse range of boating experiences amidst stunning natural beauty. Fremont, New Fork, and Half Moon Lakes, with their crystal-clear waters nestled beneath the Wind River Range invite boaters to explore their tranquil expanse and enjoy the surrounding mountainous panorama. Green River Lakes, surrounded by the majestic Wind River Mountains, offers pristine waters perfect for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Paddling along the lower and upper lake shores provides serene breathtaking views of rugged peaks and deep forest, as no motorized boats are allowed on this lake.  For those seeking a more secluded adventure, Middle Piney Lake, cradled in the foothills of the Wyoming Range, provides a serene setting for rowing, canoeing or kayaking (no motors on this lake either) with opportunities for wildlife sightings along its shores. Sublette County's waterways promise not only a refreshing escape but also a chance to connect intimately with the unspoiled landscapes of western Wyoming.

Planning

Wyoming Game and Fish is the agency tasked with safety on Wyoming lakes and rivers.

All boats, including canoes, kayaks, and rigid paddle boards must have an annual AIS sticker. Before entering many of Wyoming's waterways, your vessel will need to have an inspection to prevent the introduction of mussels into our pristine ecosytem.

Registration of watercraft is also required, you may purchase a one or three year tag from Wyoming Game and Fish.

All watercraft are required to have floatation devices for every person on board.

All boats with inboard engines, compartments where fuel tanks or combustible material may be stored; double bottoms not sealed to hull; closed living spaces; or permanently installed fuel tanks must have the proper fire extinguisher(s).

For more about the watercraft rules and regulations, visit the Wyoming Game and Fish website here.
